Two carved wood East African Masai shields-appear to carved by same hand-one appears to have female visage while the other is male-one bears carved scars the other has not-pieces are believed to be over 100 years old-there are splits in wood from drying and have been crudely repaired by native binding-minor damage to edge of both shields--despite the ravages of time and use they art sill magnificent-they should be cleaned and waxed-50 inches tall-19 inches wide-wood is curved--doubt you find others as Masai shields now from animal hide

This pair of carved tropical wood Ibo tribe helmet masks-early-first quarter of 20thc-from Nigeria-worn on head with straw or cloth veil over dancers face and body-textile long gone-there remains a coating of red paint denoting power under dirt-each mounted with goats horn on top of head-bent nails form hair-eyes are old painted glass-female has feathers in hair-minor losses and wear-pieces are stable-recently brought from Africa from private collection amassed over the years-male mask is slightly larger-both made by the same hand-pieces exude strength and power-14 inches wide-15 inches high to top of horn on largest-rare pieces-museum quality
