This pair of carved tropical wood Ibo tribe helmet masks-early-first quarter of 20thc-from Nigeria-worn on head with straw or cloth veil over dancers face and body-textile long gone-there remains a coating of red paint denoting power under dirt-each mounted with goats horn on top of head-bent nails form hair-eyes are old painted glass-female has feathers in hair-minor losses and wear-pieces are stable-recently brought from Africa from private collection amassed over the years-male mask is slightly larger-both made by the same hand-pieces exude strength and power-14 inches wide-15 inches high to top of horn on largest-rare pieces-museum quality
