This is a monumential, larger than life, bronze bust of Argentine feminist, writer, woman of the world, Victoria Ocampo [1890-1979]--sculpture is by famous pre Castro Cuban Sculptor, Arnaldo Serru, born in 1912, listed, works in National Museum of Havana--made various heads of Marti,created the famous monument in front of the piers in Havana--EL MONUMENTO AL MARINO CUBANO-- this bronze weighs over 130 pounds-signed and dated 1958-- has foundry mark-Funducion Nunez Rodriguez with what is believed to be a Havana telephone number--Tel B 7780---26 inches high--13 inches deep and 19 inches-wide-condition excellent- cast with lost wax process-deep green patina--a master work--Ms Ocampo was first women elected to Argentine academy of letters-1976-honorary degree from Harvard in 1967-founded magazine SUR in 1931 that developed into the most important literary magazine in Latin America-she clashed with the Peronistas who marked her home with a cross,identifying her as a oligarchic dissident-was imprisoned in 1953-donated her home in Buenos Aires, Villa Ocampo to UNESCO as a cultural center in 1973--she came from a patrician family-she was characterized as "THE MOST ARGINTINE WOMAN by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges--a very interesting, high quality sculpture that certainly has a tale to tell

This is an early oil sketch for a famous painting-HINDU SNAKE CHARMERS by Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny y Marsal--the sketch is 25 inches by 10.75 inches--oil painted on canvas with no condition problems--two large paintings were finished believed to be based on this sketch-one is 39 inches high and 65 inches wide and hangs in the Walters Museum in Baltimore, Md--the other is 23 inches by 49 inches is in St Petersburg in Russia at the Hermitage Museum--there are differences in composition from the sketch and painting at Walters-no figures in background in upper right hand quadrant-the snake and rabbit are handled differently--the seated figure carries a string instrument in the sketch and in the final painting he does not--both the final painting and the sketch are made from pieced canvas--do not have image or more data on painting in Hermitage so cannot compare-Fortuny was Spanish 1838--74-listed all over-sales records-and considered in the pantheon of Spanish artists of the 19th century -sketch is unsigned and unframed and was found in the US-canvas and pigments have requisite age--stretchers are old but may be not original-the two paintings in the Museums were completed in ca 1869 and were both commissioned by different private parties--this is a beautiful object fit for a serious collection
