A carved clay Indian Hindu figure in the shape of a mermaid, with the underside deeply incised with the image of an eagle over a shield with the date 1877. The mermaid is suspended from a newer chain and holds both of her hands aloft to hold the sign or a light. She is coated with a heavy layer of brown weathered outdoor paint, and measuring approx. 28"L x 7-1/2"W x 15"H.
Condition: Age wear and some minor cracks; coated with a thick layer of paint, uneven. Lacking the parts once held in the hands.--very striking piece designed to be suspended--would make a very exotic lamp.

Horace Morehen, (British, 19th Century)
A pair of bronze commemorative medallions mounted on oak plaques, each measuring approx. 7-1/2" in diameter and with the wood plaque 9-1/2" in diameter. One is a relief plaque of a portrait of Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928) and the other is of Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905), each is marked with the name "Horace Morehen" at the lower right and one is dated 1883. Morehen was a popular designer and illustrator; his works can be found in everything from periodicals to dime novels. He also designed other things including a portrait of Queen Victoria for minting on coinage.
The image of Ellen Terry is cast after an illustration in "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News" October 13, 1883, by Morehen. Sir Henry Irving took over the management of the Lyceum Theatre in August, 1878, and was identified with that theatre until 1902. The Lyceum company toured the English provinces every autumn presenting plays from the London season. In October, 1883, the company made the first of eight American tours.
Condition: Wear to the finish. The wood plaques have some age wear and a few chips.
