Puerto Rican Carved Santo 1820
This is a very important Puerto Rican Santo--made by a class of carvers in the first part of the 19th century known as the Erudito--these santeros were under the direct influence of priests who were educated and trained in Spain- as these priests died out and their inluence disappeared--the santo carvings became more provencial and yes, less erudite-- tropical hardwood carving of a saint-some losses-orignal paint--along his historical journey a Puerto Rican made him a fine straw hat and pig tail probably from a lock of human hair-good size-15 inches high and 8 inch wide-on 6.5 inch wide by 5 inch deep base-uncertain as to saint-maybe the parish priest?
