| Two antique Italian paintings on paper-18th century--scenes inspired by wall paintings found during the excavations of Pompei in the mid-18th century-believe to be painted in tempera a few years after Pompei discovery-colors bright-minor missing paint and corner nipped on lion /chariot painting-paintings are displayed compressed between two pieces of glass--frames are antique, gold leaf later covered by paint-worth restoring-easily reframed and mounted-paintings are 11 by 7 inches-add 2 inches for frame and glass-both are signed in pencil G. Deloiuse so possibly French--ink on the back is written FRIEZE IN ROOM IN POMPEI--probably added afterward--this is a stunning pair of classical paintings--rare--even well framed prints on subject expensive--discovery of Pompei caused a major stir in the art and decorative world | |||||||||||||
