Porcelain Bacchant Group French ca 1800
This a remarkable porcelain piece--It is French--mark is two crossed swords under blue glaze-- Maker is Montreuil-sous Bois located in Seine, France --it is modeled after a sculpture by Claude Michel Clodion a very important French sculptor--Clodion signature is in the back of the statue under glaze--condition is good--big toe on female repaired--the other condition problem-it may or may not be a condition problem is that during the glazing process a few bubbles formed under the glaze and became part of the statue---this is a heavy porcelain statue and firing in a primitive kiln was problematic--if any thing these imperfections confirm the age--large heavy statue--16 inches high-11 inch wide - 5.25 diameter---this a spectacular sculpture---probably the only one in porcelain--bronze was simpler to work with---first quarter 19th century
