18thc Polish Painting Portrait Ignacy Krasicki
Rare 18thc Polish oil on canvas of famous Polish bishop Ignacy Krasicki 1735-1801-he was the chief Catholic prelate, ie archbishop to Poland's last king Stanislaw Poniatowski who stood by as Poland was partitioned--Krasicki was a known satirist and literary figure- was known throughout Europe during the Enlightenment--also was welcomed in the Prussian Court in Berlin of Frederick the Great that ruled a part of Poland at the time--Painting was relined-in excellent condition provenance is from an Austrian family-there is a different portrait of him in the Polish National Gallery--- 16 inches by 11 inches--add 3.25 for decent ebonized frame. crest top projects three helmets--each surmounted differently -one with a miter-one with may be a baton -one with mythical creature-field of crest appears to be of stag horns--crest appears to be associated with his bishop office not his family--given the painted architectural faux surround, portrait was probably official design to hang with others who held office or honors. Charming historical painting rarely found outside collections
